New Joan XXIII Hospital
Tarragona, Spain / Healthcare / 80,000 m²
Ongoing
First Prize, competition for the New Joan XXIII Hospital, Tarragona, Spain 2019
The project for the new Joan XXIII Hospital in Tarragona will renovate the current hospital, add a new building, and preserve the existing emergency and CAP Francolí facilities. It will be a highly complex hospital designed with a regional focus and it will provide more space, advanced technologies, and new ways of working to meet current and future healthcare needs.
The project will be completed in three phases and cover approximately 80,000 m². The environmental impact is an integral part of the design, which features natural ventilation, the creation of large green areas, and technologies that ensure the sustainability and energy efficiency of the infrastructure.
A pedestrian “rambla” connects the north and south ends, leading to the main lobby and providing access to the various hospital buildings. The rambla’s north end will be transformed into a garden, and the south end will feature a plaza with the new public access to the Emergency. The creation of these new public spaces will contribute to the integration of the new hospital into the existing urban landscape.
